Keizo Saji's Cask - 21 Years Old - 55.5%

1991 Distillation
21 Years Old

400+ bottles released in 2012

In the summer of 1991 the president of Suntory, Mr. Keizo Saji visited Bowmore distillery. After mixing drying malt in a kiln and touring the still house, what was waiting for him in the warehouse was one sherry cask. His tour guide, Mr. Brian Morrison, handed Mr. Saji a bung to close the full new cask, and a wooden hammer.

The cask Mr. Saji filled himself was put into storage near the sea. Unexpectedly, the cask was placed right next to the malt cask donated by Bowmore to Her Majesty the Queen.

Subsequently, in 1994, Suntory became the owner of Morrison Bowmore.

After the death of Mr. Saji his son visited Bowmore distillery and donated his father's cask to the employees of Morrison Bowmore.

The single sherry cask was distilled in 1991 and bottled in 2012, this 21 year old Bowmore was only given to employees of Morrison Bowmore and not for general sale.

Distilled 1983 - Bottled 2019

Chinese Mythical Guardians Series

888 bottles released in 2019
Exclusively made available at Whisky L Shanghai (10-12 August, 2019) and through selected retailers in China.

Matured exclusively in ex-Sherry casks, the whisky is said to have aromas of ‘tropical fruit, toffee apple and caramelised orange’, with notes of ‘dried fruits roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate’ on the palate.

    Mythical status:
Bowmore Dragon Edition pays tribute to the distillery’s Sea Dragon malts.

Bowmore Dragon Edition is the first in a series of four whiskies being released in honour of the ‘Four Guardians’ that feature in Chinese mythology:

the Azure Dragon of the East,
the Vermilion Bird of the South,
the White Tiger of the West,
and the Black Turtle of the North
(also called Black Warrior).

The Dragon Edition has been created from the same parcel of casks used for the Bowmore 30 Year Old Sea Dragon released in a ceramic bottle in the 1990s, as well as two later editions bottled in glass in 2006 and 2012.

Containing some much-revered Bowmore single malt distilled in the 1960s, the now rare expressions have become regarded as classic examples of the Islay distillery’s character at the time.

David Turner, Bowmore distillery manager, said:

"This new expression is a homage to the 30 Year Old Sea Dragon that’s been much loved and collected by Bowmore fans across China.

We’ve taken this amazing legacy and renewed it for the next generation of whisky drinkers."

    A rare and elusive beast

The first of a series of four, the 36-Year-Old whisky has been specially selected from the same parcel of sherry casks used to create the iconic Bowmore 30-Year-Old Sea Dragon, exclusively released to Asia in 2012.

Born and shaped by time, the mythical dragon featured on the bottling ensures balance in everything – just like Bowmore’s master distiller. With only 888 bottles available, matched with the pedigree of the iconic 30-Year-Old Sea Dragon, this incredible expression is highly prized and sought after from whisky enthusiasts across the world.

    A rare and elusive beast

Bowmore® has a proud and rich history of producing exclusive expressions for the Asian markets.

Bowmore Phoenix Edition is the second in our annual series celebrating this tradition by showcasing the Bowmore kanji symbol on our packaging. Born on Islay, an island steeped in heritage and legend, we pay homage to our origins through the story of the Phoenix. A symbol of virtue and grace, the rare appearance of the Phoenix foretells harmony for the people – just as we seek harmony and balance in this rare 37-year-old spirit.

This expression has been crafted from a parcel of second-fill sherry casks hand selected and watched over for more than three decades. The whisky was then transferred into seasoned first-fill sherry casks for a finish of two to three years.
